Living with a disability can be a difficult burden to overcome. It can cause the inability to work or the inability to work on a full-time basis. As the cost of living is constantly on the rise, the monetary burden may be too stressful to handle. If you have a disability you may be eligiable/entitled to tax benefits by qualify for the Quebec Disability Tax Credit. This tax credit is non-refundable and helps to reduce the amount of income tax an individual with a disability has to pay. In order to be eligible for the Disability Tax Credit, you must have previously paid taxes.

There are a number of impairments that may qualify an individual for this tax credit. Several types of these impairments include: Hearing Impairment, Speech Impairment, Mobility Impairment, Visual Impairment ,Physiological Impairment, Cognitive Impairment, and Chronic Illness.

In general to qualify for the Disability Tax Credit there are three (3) basic conditions:
1. The individual must have a severe impairment; mental or physical.
2. It must be a severely prolonged impairment which will last greater than 12 months.
3. A licensed doctor or qualified practitioner must have a professional opinion stating that an individual is severely impaired.

Individuals are only eligible for the Disability Tax Credit with an approved From T2201, Disability Tax Credit Certificate. In addition, the form must be filled out and certified by a medical practitioner stating that the individual has a severe and prolonged impairment as described above.
